MDOC Lafayette Release Scope
The Mississippi Department of Corrections operates the state’s prison, sentence-computation, and community-supervision system. It does not serve as Lafayette County’s live jail roster. A local detainee who bonds out, receives time served, or completes a short county sentence may never have an MDOC record. The county sheriff’s jail docket remains the primary record for those events.
MDOC becomes the correct route when the Lafayette County Detention Center records a transfer into state custody. That county entry ends Lafayette control but does not show release from incarceration. The state locator can later show prison location and sentence data. A separate parolee record can show supervised release, while a discharge certificate provides stronger proof that the relevant state release process was completed.
| Custody question | Correct source | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Did Lafayette County transfer the person? | Sheriff jail docket | Handoff date, method, authority, and receiving agency. |
| Is the person in state prison? | MDOC Inmate Search | Current state record, location, sentence data, and Tentative Release field. |
| Is the person on parole? | MDOC Parolee Search | Community supervision record, county, and supervising officer when displayed. |
| Was the person fully discharged? | MDOC discharge or records response | Actual state release or discharge documentation. |
| Did an agency post a custody change? | Mississippi SAVIN | A timely notification lead that still needs agency confirmation. |
No MDOC prison was identified in Lafayette County. The Lafayette Probation & Parole Office is a supervision office, not a prison or detention facility. It is relevant when a state record assigns local community supervision.
Search MDOC Lafayette Records
The official MDOC Inmate Search accepts first and last name or an MDOC number. Use the ID when known because names can return more than one person. Open a detail page only after matching identity, then read the entry, location, sentence, and release fields together.
- Confirm from the Lafayette jail docket or court judgment that the person was committed or transferred to MDOC.
- Search by MDOC number, or use full first and last name with careful spelling.
- Match the photo, ID, county of conviction, offense, sentence date, and entry details before relying on the result.
- Read Location and Location Change Date as current custody fields, then read Tentative Release as a separate forecast.
- After a possible parole exit, search the parolee system and request the release or discharge record if the public fields remain unclear.
The research manifest includes a successful capture from the official MDOC search form.
The captured screen documents the public search fields. It does not show that every Lafayette County detainee enters MDOC or establish one person’s present status.
Note: A short intake gap between the Lafayette handoff and the MDOC public record should not be mislabeled as release.
Read MDOC Release Fields
An MDOC detail can display a photograph, MDOC ID, physical descriptors, Entry Date, Location, Unit, Location Change Date, sentence count and total, individual offense and sentence facts, county, sentence date, and Tentative Release. The county-of-conviction value helps match a Lafayette sentence, but it does not prove which county jail held the person before state intake.
Tentative Release is MDOC’s exact public label. It is a forecast, not an actual release date. MDOC computes parole eligibility, Earned Release Supervision dates, tentative release or discharge, and maximum release using the judgment and sentence record. Jail credit, concurrent or consecutive terms, mandatory portions, earned-time eligibility, forfeitures, detainers, Board decisions, and discharge planning can change the result.
- Location
- The unit or placement shown by the current state record.
- Tentative Release
- A changeable MDOC forecast that does not prove physical exit.
- Parole
- Conditional release from prison under Parole Board authority and MDOC supervision.
- Earned Release Supervision
- Community placement in which the person remains an inmate under MDOC jurisdiction.
- Discharge
- The documented completion or ending of the relevant state sentence status.
MDOC’s FAQ says release processing may take thirty to forty-five days and dates linked to parole or ERS are not guarantees. A discharge certificate is required before release. A forecast should therefore be paired with actual location, parolee status, SAVIN event, and the final state record.
MDOC Lafayette Release Types
State release labels carry different legal and practical meanings. Parole follows a Parole Board decision and places the person under community supervision. Probation is imposed by a court and can exist without any prison term, so a probation hit does not by itself prove an MDOC release. ERS can place a person outside prison while MDOC keeps jurisdiction and inmate status.
Full discharge is distinct from each of those statuses. A person can also move between MDOC facilities without a release, return to custody after a violation, or remain confined because of a detainer after one computed date arrives. Preserve the agency’s exact words rather than converting every community placement to “free” or every state movement to release.
Many qualifying Mississippi sentences after June 30, 1995 can follow an earned-time structure of up to 4.5 days for each thirty days served, capped at fifteen percent, with the balance potentially served on ERS. The common “85 percent” phrase is not a promise. Offense and sentence dates, habitual status, mandatory terms, conduct, forfeiture, detainers, revocation, classification, and approval of a Mississippi residence can alter eligibility.
Verify MDOC Lafayette Parole
The Mississippi State Parole Board decides whether parole is granted, while MDOC computes eligibility and supervises people in the community. A Board grant does not necessarily produce a same-day prison exit. Conditions, an approved release plan, residence, detainers, and processing can remain before physical release.
After a possible exit, use the MDOC Parolee Search. Its fields accept name, MDOC ID, city, and county. A matched record may show a photo, MDOC ID, Lafayette County, supervising officer, and Flat Time Date. That is strong evidence of current parole supervision but is not the same as full discharge.

The local office should be used only when the state record assigns supervision there or when a Lafayette supervision record needs clarification. No public Lafayette-specific absconder or warrant list was found. A blank public search cannot establish that no warrant or supervision issue exists.
Request MDOC Release Records
When public fields do not resolve actual release, use the MDOC and Parole Board record path. The MDOC GovQA portal is the documented state request route. Ask for the existing discharge certificate, release record, sentence computation, credited time, parole or ERS action, location history, and any detainer or receiving-agency entry relevant to the identified state episode.
A narrow request should provide the full name, MDOC number, county and cause number, sentence date, and bounded time range. Ask for electronic delivery and segregable nonexempt parts. If a code appears, request its key. If an agency withholds a field, preserve the written response and its stated exemption.
Errors also follow the source. A sentence or MDOC date issue belongs with the person’s case manager and state records process. A court judgment issue belongs with the clerk and sentencing court. A Lafayette transfer-code problem belongs with the sheriff. Supply the supporting order without sending unneeded personal identifiers to unrelated offices.
For time-sensitive notice, Mississippi SAVIN can report release, transfer, return to custody, escape, and supervision absconding from participating agency files. The event is a lead, not a certified discharge. Confirm it with MDOC and retain the time and source agency.
Lafayette Transfer Into MDOC
The Lafayette County jail docket should record a transfer to a penitentiary officer or MDOC as the end of county control. That wording is essential. It distinguishes a state-custody handoff from a bond release or local sentence completion. Ask for the officer receipt, transfer time, destination, cause number, and transport record.
If the MDOC record does not appear at once, call both agencies. Intake and transport can create a public timing gap. Once the state record appears, match the county sentence, entry date, offense, and identity. The statewide MDOC system then controls the later incarceration and state release evidence.
The Lafayette County Detention Center release page explains how to secure the county-side docket and receiving-agency entry. Keep that record with MDOC’s later details so the custody chain shows no unsupported gap.
County and state credits must not be mixed. A Lafayette program article documented a local treatment credit in 2022, but it does not establish present availability or eligibility for a named sentence. State-prison earned-time rules come from MDOC and the state sentence, while local jail credits come from the jail and sentencing court.
No Lafayette MDOC Prison
No state prison located in Lafayette County was identified in the official facility sources reviewed. The facility list includes MDOC because people can transfer from the county jail into the statewide prison and community-supervision system. That listing must not be read as a claim that an MDOC prison sits in Oxford or elsewhere in Lafayette County.
The Lafayette Probation & Parole Office is the only local MDOC point documented for this scope. It supports community supervision. It does not house prisoners and should not be used as an inmate mailing, visitation, or pickup address. Prison visitation, mail, property, and exit procedures depend on the actual MDOC unit shown by the live record.
If a state record names a unit outside Lafayette County, use that facility’s official MDOC contact information. If the person leaves on parole or ERS and is assigned locally, use the Lafayette supervision office for status clarification. For full discharge, rely on the state release record rather than the existence of a local office entry.
Note: MDOC is listed because it receives Lafayette transfers, not because research identified a state prison within Lafayette County.
